Despite its name the ninespine stickleback may bear from seven to twelve spines, though nine has been observed to be the most common. Though commonly believed to be a freshwater fish, saltwater populations have been observed in northern climates.

Family The ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius)isa small (typically 4–6 cm standard length), euryhaline fish with a circumpolar distribution in the northern hemi-sphere, including freshwater habitats and northern coasts of North America and northern Eurasia. This species exhibits striking morphological variation The ninespine stickleback lives in streams, lakes, ponds and rivers and favors thick submerged vegetation, as its small spines do not offer much protection. Like the three spined stickleback, they have a series of scutes or bony plates along the lateral line but, in freshwater populations, these are frequently reduced in number with a gap between the anterior and posterior plates. Ninespine stickleback

The species occurs in freshwater systems draining into the Arctic Ocean and the Atlantic across Canada and Behaviour. During the breeding season The ninespine stickleback is found in both brackish waters and freshwater lakes and rivers. In rivers and streams it is generally found in slower areas where there is vegetation. The diet of the ninespine stickleback consists mostly on aquatic insects and crustaceans, but will will eat the eggs and young other speciesof fish. They have 2-10 stout, unconnected dorsal spines followed by a soft dorsal fin.

The gene responsible for loss of the pelvis in the ninespine stickleback is on chromosome 4, but in the threespine stickleback, the pelvic-loss gene is named Pitx1 and is located on chromosome 7. (The researchers ruled out the possibility that the Pitx1 gene jumped to chromosome 4 in the ninespine stickleback.)

A Pictorial Guide to Freshwater Fishes of Connecticut. The ninespine stickleback has a tapered head with an upturned mouth. The body section between the end of the dorsal and anal fins and the base of the caudal fin is very slender. No scales are present, but small scutes can be found in a few locations on the body.
