Kiruna Forever introduces visitors to superhuman systems and forces while also taking care to balance its grand analytical gestures with human-scale narratives and artifacts, such as emotional video interviews with residents and full-scale reconstructions of the most important building lost in the relocation process, the former city hall, a generous space once affectionately known as the city’s “living room.” We visit the north east area of Kiruna, that will become the new center of Kiruna and drive through the company area and the mine city park in the old part of Kiruna. We end the tour with coffee/tea and a sandwich in connection with an exhibition and slideshow in facilities of Kiruna Storytelling. Kiruna was founded as a community in the early 20th century when mining operations began. When the city was established it consisted of three areas where the means of transportation of the day required housing close to the workplace. Kiruna’s development started expanding in the 1940’s and the city was granted its city privileges in 1948. Taking into account the diverse typologies of inhabitants corresponding to different degrees of permanence in Kiruna, the storytelling expresses the project complexity using different points of view: scientific guest worker, tourist, local miner, Sami farmer. The city of Kiruna is transforming in many ways when the big iron ore mine is going deeper.
